Microsoft Partners with Inworld AI to Bring AI Tools to Xbox Developers

Tim Price

Microsoft has teamed up with Inworld AI, the creator of an AI character engine widely used by developers, to provide Xbox developers with AI tools for generating characters, dialogue, questlines, and more. This partnership will result in the development of an AI toolset that includes an AI design copilot for scripts and dialogue, as well as an AI character engine that can be seamlessly integrated into games to dynamically generate stories, quests, and dialogue.

These AI tools will not be mandatory for developers, allowing them the freedom to decide whether or not to utilize them. Xbox’s general manager of gaming AI, Haiyan Zhang, expressed the desire to assist developers in realizing their creative visions, pushing the boundaries of gaming, and enhancing gameplay and player connection through experimentation.

The relationship between AI and gaming has been complex, with concerns arising due to the increased use of automated AI tools coinciding with layoffs in game development studios. Developers have been cautious about publicly disclosing their use of AI, as seen with World of Warcraft’s team clarifying that AI is employed to handle more mundane tasks without impacting human work or creativity.

AI-generated character dialogue has also faced criticism, as seen with Embark’s first-person shooter game, THE FINALS, where negative feedback was received regarding AI-generated commentary for in-game announcers. The developer emphasized that the goal was not to replace voice actors entirely.

In March, Ubisoft faced backlash after implementing an AI tool named “Ghostwriter” to aid in narrative design and initial writing drafts.

It is worth noting that Microsoft recently completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, a major game publisher.
