Overactive Media (OAM), the parent company of Toronto Defiant, has officially announced their departure from the Overwatch League (OWL). In a statement released on November 8th, OAM confirmed that they have reached a final agreement with Activision Blizzard to terminate their involvement in the franchised league. As part of the agreement, OAM will receive a termination payment of $6 million USD from Activision Blizzard.
Adam Adamou, co-founder and interim CEO of OAM, expressed that despite their decision to end their contract with the OWL, they still have intentions to compete in Overwatch esports in the future. He emphasized OAM’s unwavering commitment to their teams and esports, stating that this move is a crucial step towards ensuring their continued success. Adamou also mentioned that more information regarding their vision for Toronto Defiant and their plans to return to Overwatch esports will be shared soon.
Toronto Defiant becomes the second team to exit the Overwatch League, following the departure of Chengdu Hunters in June 2023.
