Controversy Surrounds Changes to League of Legends Pinging System

Tim Price

League of Legends patch 13.22 introduced a change to the game’s pinging system, which has sparked controversy among the community. The pinging system is primarily used for communication but is often abused for toxic behavior. While there are legitimate reasons to use pings, Riot Games’ Phreak oversimplified their importance, suggesting that typing messages is sufficient.

However, in the absence of voice channels, fluid communication is crucial, and typing can be cumbersome. This viewpoint has upset many players who believe that restricting communication tools is not the solution to in-game misbehavior. Instead, they argue for addressing the root causes of toxicity.

A Reddit post highlighted this issue, emphasizing that pings serve as a faster alternative to typing and were originally introduced to enhance teamwork. Players rightly point out that removing one method of annoyance will only lead to the emergence of another, without tackling the underlying problem.
