Players are concerned about the PlayStation 5 Slims as reformatting the system can lead to significant problems with the disc drive. This discovery was made on Nov. 10 when a Twitter user named DoesItPlay1 warned others about the consequences of reformatting the PS5, which includes the disc drive losing its registration and connection to PlayStation servers.
According to DoesItPlay1, this issue can cause various problems, particularly in terms of preservation. Once the servers that the disc drive connects to go down, it becomes impossible to play games that require the drive. Even a full factory reset does not solve this problem, as formatting the memory of the PS5 Slim will still unregister the detachable disc drive.
Ars Technica previously reported that players need a stable internet connection to verify the PS5 Slim’s external disc, which may not be available indefinitely. This stands in stark contrast to handheld consoles like the Gameboy, where you can simply insert the cartridge and start playing without any need for online verification. This reliance on online services for basic functionalities can pose a problem in the future.
Following the revelation on Twitter, gamers expressed concerns about the lack of preservation awareness among other players. As one Redditor pointed out, while it may not be an issue currently, it will become problematic 20 years down the line. This means that future retro gamers will be unable to experience the original offerings of the PS5 if its servers have already shut down.
It appears that consoles are increasingly dependent on online services for functionalities that were previously possible offline. However, it is important to note that the information shared on Twitter is based on claims rather than official details.
We have reached out to Sony for comments regarding these preservation concerns.
