Fans Concerned About Live-Service Approach for Upcoming Wonder Woman Game

Xavier Ward

Warner Bros’ job listing for a lead gameplay software engineer for its highly anticipated Wonder Woman game has raised concerns among fans. The listing mentions the need to “maintain a live software product or game,” sparking fears that the game may adopt a live-service model.

It has been almost two years since the Wonder Woman trailer was unveiled at the 2021 Game Awards, and fans have been eagerly awaiting more information about the gameplay, story, and release date. However, details have been scarce.

A recent job listing for Wonder Woman on the Warner Bros job board has shed some light on the game. The listing includes a “nice to have” requirement for applicants to be able to assist in maintaining a live service product or game. This revelation has left fans worried about the direction the game might take.

While fans hope that the live-service approach is not true, it is not entirely surprising. Warner Bros announced on November 9 that it would be focusing on creating more live-service games, despite their most prominent titles, like Hogwarts Legacy, not being live-service.

The live-service model aims to prolong the lifespan of games and provide additional revenue opportunities for developers and publishers. While this approach works well for certain genres, such as open-world RPGs like World of Warcraft, fans believe it may not be suitable for a single-player, story-focused superhero action game like Wonder Woman.

Furthermore, the success of Spider-Man 2, which sold 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours, has left many gamers eager for another similar superhero experience.

Ultimately, fans believe that the live-service model is not the right fit for any Warner Bros franchise, especially when players have limited time to dedicate to gaming each week and prefer to enjoy story-driven releases without the need for expansions and DLCs.

Only time will tell if the fans’ concerns will be addressed in the development of Wonder Woman.
