China’s League of Legends Pro League (LPL) will not have an English broadcast for the upcoming 2024 season, leaving English-speaking fans in the dark. The decision was revealed by former caster Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles, who expressed disappointment that one of the best leagues in the world would be less accessible.
According to MonteCristo, the existing production has been cancelled and Riot Games, the game’s developer, has not yet provided an alternative broadcast. There are no plans to continue the official LPL English broadcast next year. It is uncertain whether Riot’s Stryker facility in Dublin will take over coverage remotely, but time is running out before the Mid-Season Invitational.
MonteCristo understands the importance of an English broadcast for the Eastern League regions and hopes a solution can be found. He acknowledges that the situation is not Riot HQ’s fault, but rather the decision of the Chinese stakeholders at the LPL.
Freelance color caster Alex “Nymaera” Hapgood, who worked on the LPL English broadcast team this year, also expressed surprise at the announcement. They appreciated the effort put into the broadcast during the LPL Summer Split and hope to continue showcasing their passion in some form next year.
The news has disappointed fans and players, especially as it comes on the day of the Worlds Championship finals. Losing English coverage for one of the top leagues in the world would be devastating for the scene and its community.
This announcement adds to the disappointment of Worlds 2023 finals day, as there are rumors that the LCS (League of Legends Championship Series) is also set to be downsized next year. Hopefully, a resolution can be found for LPL fans before the Spring Split begins in early 2024.
