League of Legends has just announced its newest champion, Hwei, who will be the first in the game to have a whopping 10 different spells in his arsenal. This includes 11 if you count his passive ability. Hwei’s unique gameplay revolves around three different “forms” that allow him to switch between various abilities categorized under Disaster (Q), Serenity (W), and Torment (E).
Hwei’s ability set is unlike any other champion in the game. By dipping his paintbrush into his palette, he can change his ability bar and access a whole new set of spells. Each subject offers three different abilities, with Disaster focusing on damage, Serenity on support, and Torment on crowd control.
To select an ability, Hwei simply presses Q, W, or E to choose the subject, and then presses the same button again to cast a specific ability from that subject. For example, pressing Q twice will cast Devastating Fire, a straight-line fireball, while pressing Q and then W will cast Severing Bolt, an area-of-effect spell. After casting a spell, Hwei’s form resets to a neutral state, allowing him to continue selecting abilities.
When two damaging abilities interact, Hwei’s passive ability, Signature of the Visionary, triggers an explosion around him. His ultimate ability, Spiraling Despair, remains the same regardless of his current subject.
Hwei’s versatility allows players to build him as a damage-focused AP Mage or utilize his abilities to support and crowd control enemies. With so many abilities and interactions, some may argue that Hwei is overloaded, but it remains to be seen how Riot will balance him. With 10 different abilities, he can’t possibly excel at everything, right?
Hwei is set to be released during the Patch 13.24 cycle later this year. Stay tuned for his arrival on live League servers.
