The upcoming League of Legends ranked season will be dominated by the Void, as monsters from another dimension invade Summoner’s Rift and bring about significant changes. These alterations will include new objectives, transformed jungle camps, and modified terrain, ensuring that the influence of the Void will heavily impact ranked games in the 2024 season. One of the most notable additions will be the introduction of a new jungle camp called “Voidgrubs,” which will spawn in Baron Nashor’s pit.
Starting at the five-minute mark of each game, three Voidgrubs will appear in the Baron pit and remain there until they are killed or despawn. These Voidgrubs will replace the first Rift Herald, meaning teams will no longer have two Heralds to contest. Each Voidgrub has its own respawn timer, and a maximum of six Voidgrubs can spawn in a single game. At the 14-minute mark, the Rift Herald will return to its usual spot inside the Baron pit, providing players with a familiar threat.
Unlike the Rift Herald, Voidgrubs offer an early-game buff for players to fight over. While the Rift Herald’s tower-taking abilities are valuable, Riot Games intends to shift this pressure to the mid-game rather than the early stages of a match. Instead of the Eye of the Herald buff, players who defeat Voidgrubs will receive the Hunger of the Void buff. This buff grants a damage-over-time effect that increases damage to structures, offering a different advantage compared to the flat boost from the Rift Herald.
The Hunger of the Void buff can stack based on the number of Voidgrubs killed, making it particularly potent for solo laners who venture to the Baron pit early in the game to enhance their laning phase capabilities.
However, fans of the Rift Herald need not worry. This iconic early-game objective will still be present, and in fact, it will receive a significant upgrade in 2024. Players will still be able to summon the Rift Herald and unleash her charge onto a tower. Additionally, a new interaction will allow players to jump onto the Rift Herald’s back and ride it like a Sandworm from Dune, dealing even more damage to turrets.
These changes will make the topside of the river even more dynamic and valuable to fight over, particularly in the early stages of League games. The updates will be available on the League PBE later today, November 20th.
