Elon Musk’s Quake Skills: Fact or Fiction?

Derek Morgan

Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, recently claimed that he was one of the best Quake players during his college days. However, the early days of esports make it difficult to verify such claims. Limited record-keeping, local tournaments with low stakes, and the anonymity of online gaming handles create a barrier between the public and a true understanding of who excelled in video games at that time.

Quake, a popular game in the early days of esports, had its first notable tournament called Red Annihilation, won by Dennis “Thresh” Fong. Fong even received a Ferrari 328 GTS from John Carmack, co-founder of id Software, for his victory. While many doubt Musk’s prowess as a high-level Quake player, Fong himself seems to remember playing with him.

Fong confirmed that Musk played Quake extensively, and they often played on the same Stanford servers. Musk’s gaming handle was apparently “Zip2,” which coincidentally was the name of a company he founded with his brother in the 1990s.

However, Musk’s claim of being one of the best Quake players in the world seems like an exaggeration. It appears to be the bluster of someone who achieved success in local tournaments and mistakenly believes it translates to international recognition. This type of overconfidence is not uncommon among individuals who place well in small-scale competitions and mistakenly think it makes them globally significant.

Musk’s statement aligns with his typical style. He takes an empirical truth, such as “free speech is the foundation of a free society,” and distorts it to promote his own agenda. He markets it until it becomes “free speech is the foundation of a free society, and only I can truly provide it.” This pattern is evident in Musk’s Twitter presence.

Therefore, it is highly unlikely that Elon Musk was even remotely one of the best Quake players in the world. While he may have been skilled and won some money in tournaments, claiming to be among the elite players in an era when esports was not as developed as it is today is simply ludicrous. It is akin to asserting that you could tackle Derrick Henry because you played football for the Philadelphia Eagles in the early 1940s. If Musk’s claim holds any truth, it is likely due to a lack of competition rather than exceptional skill.
