Controversial NPC Aradin: Love Him or Hate Him?

Derek Morgan

Aradin, an NPC encountered early on in Baldur’s Gate 3, sparks strong emotions among players. Some despise him from the start, while others feel sorry for him. However, his actions in Act Three leave little room for sympathy.

Upon meeting Aradin, players find him and his party surrounded by goblins at Emerald Grove’s gate. After assisting in their defense, Aradin converses with the Tieflings’ leader, Zevlor. This encounter alone is enough to provoke disdain towards Aradin.

Many players sympathize with Aradin, believing he was unaware of the dangers involved when accepting the contract to retrieve the Nightsong. They may also harbor negative feelings towards the Tieflings, further influencing their empathy. However, Aradin’s true nature is revealed in Act Three.

If Aradin survives and discovers the Nightsong in your camp, he will ambush you alongside a dozen mercenaries after a long rest. This treacherous act shocked me during my first playthrough, solidifying my dislike for him. Subsequent runs led me to let the goblins kill him during the initial fight to prevent the Act Three ambush.

Gale, another controversial character in BG3, elicits some sympathy due to his troubled past. However, he remains honest in his interactions. Aradin, on the other hand, does not deserve any empathy.
