Riot Games has announced that the LCS will undergo significant changes in 2024, reducing the league to just eight teams. Evil Geniuses and Golden Guardians have agreed to exit the league without replacement, a decision that has not been well received by the Players Association.
In response to Riot’s announcement, the LCSPA released a statement expressing their dissatisfaction with the last-minute decision, which has resulted in the loss of jobs for 20% of the league overnight. The association also highlighted concerns about the limited time given to affected players to find new opportunities. However, they acknowledged that removing struggling organizations could ultimately benefit the league.
Evil Geniuses has faced previous controversies, including mistreatment allegations from player Kyle “Danny” Sakamaki in early 2023. The organization has also been involved in legal disputes with Dota 2 player Syed “SumaiL” Hassan and reportedly has ongoing conflicts with their VALORANT roster.
The Player’s Association emphasized the importance of giving players a voice in shaping the future of the LCS, stating that only through their full participation can a better future be built for the league.
Earlier this year, the LCSPA demonstrated its influence when Riot unexpectedly removed the requirement for LCS teams to have Academy rosters. The association voted for a walkout during the opening games of the Summer Split, leading Riot to postpone the games and face the possibility of canceling the Split and stripping Worlds qualification slots.
While the LCSPA cannot formally order a strike due to its status as a player’s association rather than a recognized union, it retains the power to initiate a walkout. The unique structure of esports with developer-franchised leagues complicates unionization efforts, as there are multiple parties involved, including players, organizations, and Riot themselves.
It remains uncertain whether this will be a turning point for the LCSPA and if they will vote to take action once again.
