Following the news of Evil Geniuses (EG) stepping away from the LCS and competitive League of Legends, several professional players in Riot’s other main competitive title, VALORANT, are actively expressing their desire for EG to leave that scene as well, despite their recent world championship win.
After the official announcement about EG and Golden Guardians’ departure from the LCS, Jordan “Zellsis” Montemurro from Sentinels took a shot at EG, calling them “frauds” and asking Riot to remove them from the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT). Zellsis’ tweet received support from Anthony “vanity” Malaspina, Cloud9’s in-game leader and a member of the Americas VALORANT Players Association.
Zellsis was not the only one using the term “fraud” towards EG. Former NRG captain, Pujan “FNS” Mehta, also used the same term when bantering with EG’s contracted player, Kelden “Boostio” Pupello.
The negative sentiment towards EG, particularly among fans and professional VALORANT players, is not solely due to their departure from the LCS. Reports have emerged that EG informed their players, weeks after winning the Champions 2023 tournament, that they would have to take a pay cut or find another team. These reports have shed an unfavorable light on EG.
It remains to be seen whether EG will continue competing in VALORANT. A report by Richard Lewis earlier this month stated that EG intended to continue competing in Riot titles, but now they have completely exited the LCS and competitive League. Rumors from VALORANT scrim leakers suggest that EG is still trialing players for next year. However, if today’s LCS announcement is any indication, the players and coaching staff may be the last to know about any changes in EG’s plans.
Dot Esports has reached out to Riot for further comment regarding EG and their involvement with VALORANT.
