Riot Games is taking steps to address the frustration surrounding tank champions in League of Legends. In the upcoming 2024 preseason, the focus will be on adjusting tank items to prioritize defense rather than damage output. This change aims to reduce the dominance of tanks like K’Sante and create a more balanced gameplay experience.
The preseason will introduce new and returning tank items that enhance defensive capabilities. Hollow Radiance, a magic resist version of Sunfire Cape, will passively deal magic damage to nearby enemies. Unending Despair rewards players for extended fights by dealing magic damage to nearby enemies while providing self-healing. Kaenic Rookern offers a significant magic shield when out of combat, providing additional protection. Force of Nature will have a lower threshold to activate its movement speed bonus, making it more appealing to players. Existing tank items like Jak’Sho the Protean and Dead Man’s Plate will also receive passive reworks for improved efficiency.
However, these changes come with the removal of certain items for balancing purposes. Turbo Chemtank, Radiant Virtue, Evenshroud, Gargoyle’s Stoneplate, Aegis of the Legion, and Lifewell Pendant will be removed from the game.
These adjustments to tank items, along with changes to items in other classes, are currently available for testing on the PBE. Players can expect a shift in the meta and a potential decrease in the prevalence of long-standing tank champions.
