Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Reportedly Canceled by Sony

Derek Morgan

According to insider Jeff Grub, Sony has decided to pull the plug on the highly anticipated remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The game’s cancellation is primarily attributed to the need for Lucasfilm to secure a funding partner like Sony, which they have been unable to find.

During an episode of Game Mess Mornings on the Giant Bomb YouTube channel, Jeff Grub shed light on the reasons behind the demise of the KOTOR remake. He revealed that the game’s development heavily relied on a financial backer like Sony. However, since Sony is no longer involved and Lucasfilm is reluctant to invest in games directly, they seek external partners who can fund or find their own partners for development.

This unfortunate turn of events means that a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake cannot proceed without a willing group or company to finance it. While Sony was initially interested in shouldering the costs, they have since withdrawn their support. Is there a possibility that another company could step in and make the KOTOR remake a reality, pleasing Star Wars fans?

In theory, yes, but it would require a major partner with substantial resources, comparable to Sony. Many speculate that Microsoft could be a potential candidate, considering the franchise’s history with Xbox as the original game was exclusive to the console. However, this would also necessitate Microsoft to allocate additional funds, which may be challenging following their recent acquisition of Activision.

Although it is disheartening to see Sony back away from the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, it does not mean that all hope is lost. As long as another company is willing to provide the necessary funding, there remains a possibility that the remake could still become a reality and deliver the experience that fans have been eagerly anticipating.
