Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) has achieved the highest player engagement in the new Modern Warfare trilogy. Although the company did not provide specific player numbers or total hours played, they stated that MW3 has more hours per player overall compared to Modern Warfare 2019 and Modern Warfare 2.
Despite receiving negative reviews, with critics calling out its short and uninspired campaign, MW3 has managed to capture players’ attention. Activision revealed that players are spending more time on the MW3 campaign than on MW 2019 or MW2. This is likely due to the inclusion of locked trophies and achievements behind the “Open Combat Missions,” rather than the campaign’s quality or length. Most players can complete the campaign in just three or four hours.
In a Twitter announcement, CoD expressed gratitude towards MW3 players for their support and highlighted the game’s record-breaking launch. The company acknowledged the players’ feedback and passion, emphasizing that it inspires them to improve. They also promised more exciting content to come.
While MW3’s multiplayer has received positive feedback from the community, praising its weapons, new movement mechanics, and classic maps, there has been criticism regarding the over-tuned skill-based matchmaking, making the game more challenging than necessary. The controversy surrounding skill-based matchmaking has generated significant discussion on social media platforms.
Modern Warfare Zombies, on the other hand, seems to be well-received by most players. Activision claims it is the most engaging third mode in MW history, although they did not provide further details on what that entails. Previous third modes, such as Spec Ops and Raid, lacked replay value.
Additionally, Activision confirmed that season one will launch on December 6th, introducing new content to multiplayer, Zombies, and the Warzone map, Urzikstan.
MW3 currently holds a 55 critic score on Metacritic and a 1.8 user score.
