On November 20, Ravensburger faced a relentless onslaught of over five million bots, causing major disruptions to the online sales of Disney Lorcana Rise of the Floodborn and The First Chapter. As a result, the organization had to temporarily suspend all online sales for Disney Lorcana products.
The overwhelming bot requests overwhelmed the Ravensburger website, leading to constant booting of players attempting to purchase Disney Lorcana Rise of the Floodborn and Disney100 products. Despite efforts to combat the DDoS attack, Ravensburger was unable to prevent the flood of bots, ultimately forcing them to halt the website sales of Rise of the Floodborn.
Ravensburger had anticipated high demand for Rise of the Floodborn and had implemented a system, Queue-Fair, to handle a significant number of human users. However, the scale of the DDoS attack far exceeded expectations, and even additional measures proved ineffective in stopping the onslaught.
Queue-Fair reported that their network-level bot protections successfully blocked over 95 percent of the nearly five million bot traffic requests from reaching the servers. Nevertheless, many players experienced disruptions, being either kicked out of the queue or sent back to it while trying to enter their purchase information. The DDoS attack temporarily overloaded the original provisioned cluster, resulting in visitors encountering error pages during the traffic migration process.
While local game stores received the first batch of Rise of the Floodborn products on November 17, the retail launch is scheduled for December 1. Players turned to the Ravensburger website due to the closer-to-MSRP pricing and the hope of acquiring a limited Disney100 box.
At the time of writing, Ravensburger has not provided a specific date for resuming online sales of Disney Lorcana products. Dot Esports has reached out to Ravensburger for further information.
