The focus of Blueberry Academy, the new expansion, is Double Battles. Players who had the opportunity to go hands-on with the DLC for an hour reported that most, if not all, of the battles in the expansion will be doubles. Trainers in the game employ strategies commonly seen in online battles or post-game content, utilizing Abilities, moves, and items that are not frequently encountered in regular gameplay. For example, some trainers set up Trick Room and Grassy Terrain, while others give their Pokémon Toxic Orbs to boost their Attack through the Guts ability.
The difficulty level of the expansion was evident during the previews. Even with pre-prepared teams of high-level Pokémon, many players found themselves defeated by the Elite Four Amarys. She employs classic and brutal Double Battle strategies that stunned players with their toughness. This challenge reminded some players of later challenges in facilities like the Battle Tower.
The inclusion of challenging battles and NPCs like the Ogre Clan in The Teal Mask indicates that Game Freak is introducing more difficult battle styles in Scarlet and Violet. This expansion aims to provide a more competitive experience without locking it behind a battle facility.
