Legends of Runeterra Added to League of Legends Client in Effort to Boost Player Numbers

Xavier Ward

Riot Games is integrating Legends of Runeterra (LOR) into the core League of Legends client, following a similar approach to the inclusion of Teamfight Tactics. This move aims to revitalize the card game’s player base.

The LOR button now appears alongside the TFT and Worlds hub tabs in the League client, initially available only on Oceanic clients. Clicking on the button opens the Runeterra-specific client over the League program. The intention behind this test, which began on November 21, is to increase visibility and attract new and returning players to the digital card game.

If the tests prove successful, meaning an increase in the number of LOR players, Riot will implement the same button across major regions. A client-based launch button has already proven effective in maintaining a strong player base for TFT, so it is likely to have a positive impact on the numbers for the Runeterra CCG as well.

Currently, there is no specific data on the daily player count for Runeterra. However, according to Mastering Runeterra, a LOR guides website, the game has been downloaded by an estimated 10 to 20 million players since its initial release in 2020. Additionally, queue times have not been an issue, indicating a healthy player population.

This League client update is expected to further increase the player base of Runeterra, as it provides easier access and visibility. While still in the early testing phase, Riot Meddler, the head of League, has hinted that this is just the first step in a larger campaign to promote LOR. Therefore, it is likely that the Runeterra button will remain in the client regardless of the results from the Oceanic region.

Runeterra offers a wide range of content for both new and returning players. Riot has released ten sets since the game’s debut in 2020, with the most recent being Fate’s Voyage in September 2023. The game has also undergone significant changes, such as the introduction of format rotation and Standard play in March, similar to Magic: The Gathering.
