Ubisoft has reassured fans that the highly anticipated remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is still being worked on and has recently achieved an important milestone in its development.
In a Twitter thread celebrating the 20th anniversary of the original game, Ubisoft asked fans to share their cherished memories of playing it and also shared some concept art. While the specific details of the internal milestone were not disclosed, it is encouraging to hear positive news about the remake after a long period of silence.
Many fans expressed their relief and surprise that the project is still ongoing, as there had been concerns that it had been canceled due to the lack of updates from Ubisoft.
The Sands of Time remake was initially announced in 2020 with a planned release date of January 2021, but it was later delayed indefinitely. The development of the game was transferred from Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal, the same studio responsible for the original Sands of Time and its sequels.
A report from TheGamer shed light on the troubled development process of the remake at Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai, citing issues with the AnvilNext 2.0 engine and a lack of support from the publisher. Ubisoft had aimed to release the remake within its 2023 fiscal year but faced further delays, leaving the game without a confirmed launch window.
Hopefully, Ubisoft will provide a more substantial update on the progress of the remake in 2024. In the meantime, fans can look forward to the release of a new Prince of Persia game titled The Lost Crown on January 18. This game takes the series back to its 2D roots with a Metroidvania style, although it has received criticism from some fans who were expecting the Sands of Time remake.
