An ex-Rockstar North developer, Obbe Vermeij, who left the company in 2009, has decided to close his blog after receiving an email from the studio expressing concerns from some of his former colleagues. This incident highlights the detrimental impact of excessive secrecy within the gaming industry.
While it is understandable that spoilers are disliked, there is a clear distinction between sharing insights into game development and revealing sensitive information. Vermeij’s blog aimed to shed light on his experiences at Rockstar North between 1995 and 2009, a period too distant to disclose any current secrets. However, his former colleagues were worried about potential damage to the “Rockstar mystique,” leading him to remove several blog posts.
Last year, when GTA 6 was leaked, chaos ensued. Many people ridiculed the leaked footage, deeming it subpar. However, this reaction stems from a lack of understanding regarding the game development process. Games often appear unimpressive during their early stages and only come together shortly before release. Unfortunately, most game developers do not provide glimpses into this process, leaving leaks to be compared to finished products, which naturally fall short.
In contrast, the film and TV industries regularly share behind-the-scenes content, such as set photos and unfinished scenes, as part of their marketing strategy. Audiences understand that these elements will be enhanced later through CGI and audio. However, when it comes to game development, the public is often taken aback by the raw and unpolished nature of leaked material due to its unfamiliarity.
Rather than Rockstar causing a commotion over a former employee sharing outdated insights from 14 years ago, perhaps they, along with other developers, should consider being more transparent about the true process of game development. This openness would help bridge the gap between leaked content and the final product, allowing fans to better comprehend and appreciate the intricate journey of creating a game.
