It’s been a turbulent year for LCS fans, with ups and downs aplenty. However, the future looks bleak for the league as it heads towards one of its worst years in terms of viewership.
Over the past three years, LCS viewership has steadily dropped, reaching a peak of 223 thousand viewers this summer compared to 415 thousand in the Spring Split of 2021. This significant decline has raised concerns among fans about the league’s future.
Next year, the LCS is undergoing major changes, including a shocking decision to reduce the number of participating teams in 2024. Golden Guardians and Evil Geniuses have already left the league, and Riot Games has chosen not to replace them. As a result, the upcoming 2024 Spring Split will feature only eight teams, potentially impacting the number of fans tuning in to watch.
Furthermore, the LCS has shifted its schedule to weekdays, with games taking place from Wednesday to Friday instead of the traditional weekend slots. This change has made it more challenging for fans in different time zones, particularly those on the East Coast and overseas, to catch the games live.
Another factor contributing to the potential decline in LCS viewership is the departure of several star players and the rebuilding phase of many teams. Players like Pyosik, Summit, and Prince have all left the league during the offseason, while others, like Licorice from Golden Guardians, are currently without a team.
To prevent the LCS from making history for all the wrong reasons, fans must rally together and support the league. It seems destined for another disappointing year in terms of viewership, but with the backing of dedicated supporters, there is hope for a turnaround.
