Despite significant changes to the Summoner’s Rift map in the upcoming 2024 preseason, Riot Games has confirmed that the long-standing elevation issue in League of Legends will not be resolved. The problem stems from the river area being lower than the surrounding terrain, causing abilities to be misaligned when fired into or out of the river. Fans have been campaigning for its removal for years, but the technical changes required are deemed too extensive and time-consuming by the developers.
League’s balance boss, Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison, explained that removing the elevation problem would necessitate a complete overhaul of the game code, which would consume a significant amount of time and resources. The developers concluded that it would be more efficient to work within the current constraints of the map rather than sacrificing an entire season’s worth of progress.
Unsurprisingly, League players expressed disappointment at Riot’s decision not to address the elevation issue. Some believe it is a mistake to ignore fan demands any longer, while others suggested quality-of-life updates such as improved skillshot indicators to mitigate the problem.
While Riot acknowledges the feedback from players, their focus is currently on preparing for the extensive changes coming to League of Legends in the 2024 update. These changes include numerous alterations to the map, including all three lanes and the jungle, as well as a rework of Baron Nashor and the introduction of Voidgrubs and Voidmites to replace the Rift Herald. Additionally, there will be a new Infernal Rift design and a Void-themed coasting landing across the map, along with various item updates.
However, it is important to note that elevation changes will not be part of the 2024 update for League of Legends.
