Popular video game retailer GameStop is facing accusations of selling old PS4 discs re-wrapped as “new” PS5 copies. A customer on Reddit shared a photo of their purchase of Star Ocean: The Divine Force, which they bought during a sale, claiming that the disc box contained a PS4 version of the game despite being labeled as a “new” copy for the PS5 platform. This incident has raised concerns among customers who have also claimed that GameStop has a history of selling used games as new.
According to comments on the Reddit post, GameStop defines “new” as unowned, which can include display copies or games rented by employees. When someone tries to return a game, it must be unopened to be considered new. One former employee even shared an anecdote about employees being allowed to borrow games from the store as long as they deleted the saves. These used discs would then be sold as “new.”
While some former employees disputed these claims, stating that they never borrowed games and dismissing the allegations of repackaging used games as new, the overall sentiment among customers is that this practice is unacceptable. When purchasing a game labeled as “new,” customers expect an untouched copy, not one that has been borrowed and wiped clean to mimic a new copy.
