One Redditor has used data from 14 different “best games of all time” lists to create their own list of 200 titles. By assigning scores based on rankings, they have compiled a comprehensive insight into what the gaming world considers the best games ever.
However, the results reveal a significant lack of representation for female protagonists and queer characters. Out of the 200 games, only 17 feature female protagonists and three include explicitly queer characters. This highlights the industry’s ongoing issue with diversity and inclusion.
It is not surprising that the majority of games favor male protagonists, given the historical trends in game development. However, the extent of this gender disparity, with only 8.5 percent featuring female protagonists, is disheartening.
This lack of representation may be attributed to the homogeneity within the industry itself. If all the best gaming lists are created by the same type of person, it is inevitable that we will continue to see similar patterns and limited perspectives.
Other interesting findings from the analysis include the dominance of the Mario franchise, surpassing even Zelda in popularity. Nintendo emerged as the top developer, while the indie game Journey resonated deeply with players.
Rank | Game | Score |
---|---|---|
1 | Mario | 100 |
2 | Zelda | 99 |
3 | Journey | 98 |
