I was skeptical about Foamstars at first, but after playing it at Gamescom 2023, I’m a believer. This colorful shooter is both wholesome and exhilarating, although its longevity may be in question.
During my time with Foamstars, we played the “Smash the Star” mode. Two teams of four compete to eliminate each other seven times. Once the required number of eliminations is reached, a star appears over the enemy team’s best player, granting them extra buffs and strength. To claim victory, you must take out the star.
At the beginning, I had no idea what I was doing, but my team was winning. I chose characters based on their coolness factor rather than strategy. It was chaotic, but somehow we were succeeding. By the third match, I started picking characters based on team composition and my own play style. I focused on protecting our star and supporting my teammates. I couldn’t explain my success, but it felt great to be part of a well-coordinated team.
Foamstars is a complete and enjoyable party game that will appeal to groups looking for a fun multiplayer experience. However, its long-term appeal remains uncertain. While I had a blast playing it, I feel like I’ve had my fill for now. That being said, there are still unexplored aspects of the game, such as additional online modes and a single-player campaign, which may add more depth and replayability.
