Niantic’s Pokémon Go has unveiled a sneak peek of its upcoming season, but the use of AI-generated artwork has sparked a wave of criticism among fans. Despite the excitement surrounding the introduction of Pokémon from Scarlet and Violet, players were quick to notice certain promotional materials that appeared to be created using artificial intelligence.
The Adventures Abound season, set to begin on September 1, was announced on the main Pokémon Go website. As fans eagerly analyzed the new information, they couldn’t help but focus on the peculiarities of the banner image behind the season’s logo and Paldean Starters.
At first glance, the image may not reveal much, but upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent that the lineart is inconsistent and distorted, with abrupt ends. Some sections even depict objects like walls or cars in a bizarre manner. Additionally, the entire image is intentionally blurry, possibly as a means to divert attention from these flaws.
While it has not been confirmed that AI was used for the background image, Pokémon Go enthusiasts are disappointed with Niantic for potentially resorting to a cheap and lifeless alternative. The game has always been known for its creativity in both art and video, making this departure from their usual standards disheartening.
Previous announcements have showcased beautiful art spreads featuring numerous Pokémon or videos that bring the creatures to life. These endeavors have been well-received by the community, further highlighting the disappointment surrounding the potential use of AI-generated art.
It is particularly disheartening considering that Niantic collaborates with talented artists like Yusuke Kozaki and Taiga Kasai, who have contributed to other Pokémon games such as Pokémon Masters EX. The company has even involved community artists in their projects, emphasizing their commitment to quality artwork.
Given Niantic’s involvement in various technological advancements, it wouldn’t be surprising if they embraced AI to reduce costs in areas like website backgrounds or promotional materials. However, this could potentially detract from the charm and uniqueness that make Pokémon Go so special.
While a single AI-generated background image may not have significant consequences, the concern lies in the possibility of Niantic expanding the use of AI to other aspects of the game. This could result in noticeable discrepancies or a loss of the game’s distinctive appeal.
Dot Esports has reached out to Niantic for comment regarding the alleged use of AI-generated imagery.
