Apex Legends is known for its diverse and outlandish movement tech, which adds flair to the game. However, for newcomers, these advanced movement options can be more of a hindrance than a help. It can be overwhelming for beginners to face off against skilled players who effortlessly dodge bullets and reposition mid-combat. While config files and scripting enable players to perform these tricks without practice, they only exacerbate the issue.
Unfortunately, this complex movement tech has created an unwelcoming competitive environment for new players. Nevertheless, movement is the heart and soul of Apex, and many players believe that nerfing it would ruin the game.
In a recent YouTube video, popular Apex creator Thordan Smash discussed the need for a solution to address the excessive movement tech. He acknowledged the uniqueness of Apex but highlighted how this “crazy movement” makes it challenging for newer players to keep up mechanically.
Considering Respawn Entertainment’s previous hints at aim assist changes, Smash believes that movement tech might soon become a target for developers.
Smash showcased some of the weirdest movement techs in Apex, most of which require extensive practice or are only achievable through config files. He emphasized the importance of banning configs and scripting, as they introduce uncounterable mechanics like “Riru strafing” and undermine the integrity of the game.
Most Apex players agree that configs and scripts have no place in a competitive game. These “legal” cheats compromise the game’s integrity and devalue the significance of practice and skill.
It’s worth noting that controller players on PC often use external scripts, but they have their own argument. Smash acknowledged the debate, stating, “The problem is controller players are just trying to keep up with what mouse-and-keyboard players can do. And this has been a long-standing issue.”
The ongoing debate surrounding Apex’s movement mechanics calls for a neutral solution that caters to both mouse-and-keyboard and controller players, while also simplifying the experience for new players caught in the whirlpool of skill-based matchmaking.
Respawn must find a solution that preserves the game’s flagship feature without stripping it away entirely. The question remains: is such a solution even possible?
