Riot Games is breaking the mold once again with their new Halloween skins in League of Legends. The latest skinline, called “La Ilusión,” draws inspiration from various Hispanic cultures’ interpretations of the Halloween season. The skins feature Renata Glasc, Ziggs, Draven, Qiyana, Gnar, and Nidalee engaging in post-death festivities. These skins are set to be released alongside Patch 13.19 on September 27th, with the possibility of additional Halloween-themed skins following suit.
Embracing Cultural Traditions
The “La Ilusión” skinline takes clear inspiration from the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos, as well as other celebrations of the departed in Hispanic cultures. The skins incorporate colorful skulls, known as calaveras, and marigolds, which are symbolic elements of these celebrations. Rather than mourning the loss of loved ones, these festivities celebrate their lives and the continuation of life even after death.
Symbolic Elements
Renata Glasc, Qiyana, Ziggs, and Nidalee’s skins feature candles and altars, known as ofrendas, which are integral to these cultural celebrations. Families decorate these altars with items and photographs that hold significance to the deceased. In Nidalee’s case, she pays tribute to a fallen feline companion. Additionally, Draven’s skin incorporates guitar symbols in place of his usual axes, as guitars are commonly associated with these festive traditions.
Prestige Edition
Renata Glasc also receives a Prestige version of her La Ilusión skin. This variant replaces the midnight blues and lavenders of her outfit and abilities with golds and whites. Her abilities now feature floral patterns resembling the deep gold hues associated with marigolds. It is likely that this skin will be obtainable through an upcoming event pass.
Upcoming Event
While details about the event featuring the La Ilusión skins have not been revealed, it is expected to be tied to the first part of the World Championship, as it will be released alongside Patch 13.19. More information regarding the event is anticipated in the coming weeks.
Availability and Testing
All of these skins are currently available for testing on League of Legends’ PBE server. They will remain there until they are officially released on live servers on September 27th. Assets related to a potential event, such as capsules, icons, and emotes, will likely be added to the PBE within the next week.
