On September 11, a YouTuber and streamer named Kariyu achieved the prestigious Immortal rank in the popular game VALORANT. What makes this achievement even more impressive is that Kariyu accomplished it by using a pen and a drawing tablet instead of a traditional mouse.
Kariyu documented his journey in a YouTube series titled “Pen to Immortal,” where he showcased his progress through VALORANT’s ranks using this unconventional playstyle. After six months of dedication and hard work, he finally reached Immortal, one of the highest competitive ranks in the game.
The idea behind Kariyu’s experiment was to test whether this “goofy” playstyle could compete with players who use a regular mouse. Surprisingly, using a pen for playing first-person shooter (FPS) games does have its advantages. However, it can be challenging for those who are not accustomed to it and may put additional strain on the wrist.
As an artist, Kariyu was already familiar with using a pen and tablet, as he frequently played Osu!, a rhythm game that many enthusiasts enjoy using a pen and tablet setup. This prior experience likely contributed to his ability to adapt to the pen in VALORANT.
Some Reddit users pointed out that using a pen means sacrificing any keybinds that were previously assigned to the mouse. In Kariyu’s setup video, he explained that he bound the right-click function to the “alt” key since the pen lacked mouse buttons. Surprisingly, this alternative setup worked extremely well for him.
For those interested in trying out a pen and tablet setup for VALORANT, Kariyu has provided a video explaining the necessary configuration.
This unique approach to gaming has garnered attention from fans, with some jokingly suggesting that using a pen might be their ticket out of the Gold rank. While it may not magically improve everyone’s gameplay, it is inspiring to see the creativity and innovation within the VALORANT community.
