While shotguns may lack consistency at long range, they make up for it with the reward they provide for kills. Most rifles grant $300 per elimination, but shotguns offer a hefty $900 per kill. In a game where managing economy is crucial, the extra cash from shotgun kills can help players afford rifles or other equipment in the next round.
One player pointed out that many maps in CS:GO have tight choke points before bombsites, such as Banana on Inferno or the apartments near A site. If enemies are not careful, using an XM1014 auto-shotgun can result in multi-kills and a significant cash boost.
The XM1014 is not the only shotgun gaining popularity. The Nova, previously seen as a meme weapon, has gained attention thanks to NAVI’s s1mple using it effectively at ESL Pro League season 18. With its tight pellet spread and one-hit kill potential at close range, the Nova has become a viable option for some players.
Some players believe that the Nova has an even tighter spread at a distance in CS2, suggesting that shotguns might be even stronger in the sequel.
Shotguns can be effective on various maps, such as the tight corridors and turns on Vertigo or chokepoints in Ancient’s caves or toward Ramp on Nuke. These situations allow shotguns to thrive and provide CT teams with extra cash.
However, shotguns have their limitations. They are not ideal for maps with long sight lines or when rotating or retaking a lost bombsite, where rifles offer more consistency. Additionally, shotguns are not recommended for T-side attacks, especially when the AK provides one-tap potential.
Despite any stigma surrounding shotguns, players should not be afraid to use them if they find them enjoyable. Whether it’s the “SWAG-7,” XM1014, or Nova, players can have fun blasting their opponents back to the respawn screen.
