In Baldur’s Gate 3, there are six origin companions that play a central role in the game. However, one of these companions, Wyll, seems to have been given less attention in terms of content. A recent Reddit thread highlighted this issue, pointing out that Wyll has significantly less dialogue compared to the other companions.
According to datamined files, Wyll has approximately 8 hours and 29 minutes of dialogue, which is two hours less than Karlach and four hours less than Astarion. This lack of screen time also translates into fewer camp and romance scenes for Wyll. Furthermore, he is not as involved in core storylines that should revolve around his character.
One fan expressed their disappointment, stating that Wyll “quite literally takes a backseat to the Emperor in his own storyline.” It seems that Wyll’s character development is limited, as he remains a man who simply wants to do the right thing throughout the game.
It appears that a significant portion of Wyll’s content, including his interactions with goblins, was removed during development. As a result, Wyll lacks agency in decision-making, unlike other companions. The player always has the final say, which diminishes Wyll’s role in shaping the story.
This lack of narrative opportunities for Wyll is particularly frustrating for some fans. The ability to make decisions and witness how the story unfolds independently is a unique feature of Baldur’s Gate 3 as an RPG. Unfortunately, Wyll does not have this option, which leaves him feeling underdeveloped compared to the other companions.
It is evident that Larian Studios has favored certain companions in terms of content. Astarion, for example, has the most scenes and overall content in the game. Fans hope that the developers will address this imbalance in future updates and give Wyll a more prominent role.
There are many unanswered questions about Wyll that players would like to explore, but the current lack of content prevents them from doing so. Hopefully, the developers will rectify this and provide Wyll with the attention he deserves.
