Riot Games Removes Classic BM Ping from League of Legends in Effort to Reduce Toxicity

superadmin

In an ongoing effort to combat toxicity within the League of Legends community, Riot Games has announced that they will be removing a classic taunting feature from the game. Starting with Patch 13.19, players will no longer be able to use scoreboard pings to harass their teammates.

Previously, players could ping a teammate’s name followed by “Alive” multiple times to mock them or highlight their mistakes. This form of communication will now only be visible to the player who activated the ping. However, players will still be able to see exact allied ultimate and item cooldowns through the ping system.

Another controversial ping, known as the bait ping, will also be removed due to its common usage for unacceptable behavior in solo queue and other game modes. Riot Games plans to replace it in a future patch.

While these changes aim to reduce toxicity, some members of the community argue that they are removing useful communication tools that don’t require typing. For example, players often use pings to indicate a teammate’s spawn timer in late-game situations, allowing splitpushers to defend the base without recalling.

There have been suggestions for a middle ground solution, such as implementing a relative timer for certain pings to prevent spamming while still maintaining communication capabilities.

These adjustments are part of a broader initiative by Riot Games to address toxicity in League of Legends. In addition to the ping changes, the company recently announced that toxic players will be required to play remedial non-ranked matches before being allowed back into ranked solo queue.

Patch 13.19 is scheduled to go live on Wednesday, September 27th, bringing these changes to the League of Legends community.
