BlizzCon 2023 is approaching, and Blizzard Entertainment is set to unveil the next expansion for World of Warcraft after Dragonflight. While the upcoming expansion is already complete and in the final stages of polishing, players have come up with a plot that could potentially fix the lore of Shadowlands.
On September 20, WoW players gathered on the subreddit to speculate about the next expansion. One fan suggested that Blizzard should retcon the Shadowlands lore by revealing that the past two expansions were merely a nightmare vision created by the Old God N’Zoth.
The player proposed that N’Zoth had actually emerged victorious at the end of Battle for Azeroth, and while players were incapacitated, the Old Gods took over and reestablished the Black Empire. The entire expansion, and possibly the next one as well, could then focus on the survivors reclaiming Azeroth zone by zone, with each patch expanding the reclaimed territory.
This idea encompasses everything that players have longed for: a Void-themed expansion, a revamp of the world, and the notion that the events of Shadowlands never truly occurred. It would provide an excellent opportunity to overhaul the entire old world of Azeroth, explaining how it has changed under the rule of the Old Gods and allowing players to embark on a mission to restore it. Additionally, it would offer an immersive warfront campaign as players unite to reclaim Azeroth.
While this would be an ideal solution to rectify the flawed lore, it is highly unlikely that Blizzard would discard an entire expansion. Nevertheless, players would prefer this alternative over accepting Shadowlands as canon, especially considering the negative impact it had on beloved characters like Sylvanas Windrunner, Arthas, and Anduin.
