A group of ransomware attackers has issued a threat to sell stolen data from Sony on the dark web. The group, known as Ransomed.vc, claims to have breached all of Sony’s systems and is planning to sell the data since Sony has refused to pay the ransom. CyberSecurity Connect, who first reported the news, describes the group as relative newcomers in the ransomware scene. However, the number of files they possess, which is less than 6,000, seems small compared to their claims.
Ransomed.vc has not specified a price for the stolen data but has warned that if it is not purchased by Thursday, Sept. 28, they will begin publishing the information they have collected. This incident is not the first time gaming companies have faced data breaches. Earlier this year, Riot Games fell victim to a social engineering attack that resulted in the theft of source code for games like League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics. Riot Games, like Sony, refused to pay the ransom demanded by the hackers.
Sony has not yet commented on the alleged data hack or the demands made by Ransomed.vc. It is unclear what exactly was taken and what measures Sony will take to protect its consumers. This is not the first time Sony has been targeted by hackers. In 2011, the company had to deactivate servers for the PlayStation Network due to an external intrusion that compromised personal details of millions of accounts. As a result, Sony was fined £250,000 ($396,100) by UK regulators for the serious breach of the Data Protection Act.
It remains to be seen how Sony will respond to this latest threat and what actions they will take to safeguard their data and the privacy of their users.
