Assassin’s Creed: More Than Just Stealth
It’s been almost 16 years since the first Assassin’s Creed game was released, and while we tend to remember it as a stealth-focused game, the reality may be different. A recent Reddit thread sparked a discussion about the evolution of the Assassin’s Creed series and how stealth was not always the primary focus.
In the original Assassin’s Creed game, released in 2007, stealth was indeed a favorite way to complete tasks and missions. However, it wasn’t the sole focus. The gameplay also heavily relied on action and combat. At the time, Assassin’s Creed set an example for stealth games, but it wasn’t entirely centered around it.
This trend continued in subsequent releases such as Assassin’s Creed 2, Assassin’s Creed 3, and Black Flag. While stealth played a role, combat took center stage. Players were required to stealthily assassinate only a small percentage of targets or follow them from a distance, which wasn’t always well-received by fans.
It wasn’t until more recent releases like Unity and Syndicate that stealth became a prominent feature. These games introduced deep stealth mechanics that guided players towards utilizing stealth as a primary approach. This trend is set to continue with the upcoming release of Mirage.
While some fans argue that Assassin’s Creed has strayed from its roots by over-focusing on stealth, others believe it is a natural progression for the franchise. Perhaps the emphasis on stealth is what the series was meant to be from the very beginning.
