Dota 2 players are expressing their disappointment with Valve’s latest Compendium update for The International 12 (TI12). The update, which serves as a replacement for the battle pass, has been met with criticism due to its lack of content. Additionally, the prize pool for TI12 is currently on track to be one of the lowest in the tournament’s history.
Valve’s decision to move away from the traditional battle pass structure and focus on diversifying Dota 2 updates has not been well-received by the community. Many players have already written off the TI12 Compendium, although some acknowledge that Valve is making the right choice despite its shortcomings.
However, the majority of players are speaking with their wallets, resulting in a significantly lower prize pool for TI12 compared to previous years. After 24 hours, the prize pool stood at just $2.39 million, with players spending less than $800,000 on the Compendium. This is over $1 million behind the pace set by TI5 and pales in comparison to TI11’s $6.9 million in the same timeframe.
During TI11, players expressed their dissatisfaction with Valve splitting the battle pass into two parts, with the most valuable content being delayed until after the event ended. Despite this controversy, Valve managed to turn the narrative around by offering free battle pass content, resulting in a reported $300 million in revenue.
The current pace of the TI12 prize pool suggests that it will not surpass the $18,429,613 total from TI5. In fact, if things go poorly, it could even fall below TI4’s $10,923,977, marking a significant decline in prize money for the tournament.
The issue with the TI12 Compendium is not that it is a bad update, but rather that there is little incentive for players to spend their money on it. The rewards for leveling up are minimal once the starter packs are purchased. Unless Valve introduces additional Dota 2 content, players are unlikely to invest further. However, any additional content is expected to be released after the tournament concludes.
