The recent World Championship showcased the Standard Magic: The Gathering format, leading to a significant increase in card prices on the secondary market. The event featured the Wilds of Eldraine set and other Standard legal cards, causing a surge in their prices throughout the week of Sept. 25 to 29.
The World Championship marked the end of the first MTG-organized play season, with Standard Constructed and Wilds of Eldraine Draft as the main formats. Additionally, an important announcement was made regarding the future of the Standard format as it enters its second phase. Following the championship, card prices for Standard-legal cards showcased at Worlds began to rise, with Wilds of Eldraine experiencing the largest price spikes among all the sets legal in the format, according to MTGGoldfish.

Many of the Wilds of Eldraine cards were featured in the top eight decks at the MTG Worlds. However, it wasn’t just cards from Wilds of Eldraine that saw price increases after being showcased at the World Championship. For example, Faerie Mastermind from March of the Machine rose from $6 to $11 leading up to Worlds and has now settled at $10.
Other sets also experienced price spikes after the World Championship. Sheoldred’s Edict from ONE increased by 14% to around $3.50, Mirrex from ONE went up by 10% to around $3, Hallowed Haunting from VOW saw a 10% increase to around $17, Bloodthirsty Adversary from MID rose by 14% to around $4.50, Weaver of Harmony from NEO increased by 26% to around $3, and Farewell from NEO went up by 8% to around $11. Topiary Stomper from SNC also saw an 11% increase to around $2.50.
The second phase of improving the Standard format focuses on promoting it through organized play in the upcoming 2023-2024 season. As the format potentially gains popularity, players should expect price increases for cards that are crucial in top-tier meta decks.
The next Standard-legal set, Lost Caverns of Ixalan, is set to release on Nov. 17. MTG Commander players can also look forward to the release of Doctor Who on Oct. 13.
