The League of Legends competition at the Asian Games concluded today, with Korea’s national team emerging as the champions. However, it was JD Gaming, a Chinese team, that made a significant impact during the semifinals against China’s team. Three players from JD Gaming showcased their skills and proved why they are considered one of the best teams in the world.
In the match between Korea and China, JD Gaming’s mid laner Knight represented his home country, while the team’s two Korean imports, jungler Kanavi and AD carry Ruler, played for Korea. Ruler, known as one of the greatest ADCs of all time, delivered an outstanding performance with a scoreline of 12/1/15 across the two-game sweep. His dominance in the LPL this season is evident, with the highest KDA among all players in the league.
However, when Ruler competes in Worlds next month, he will be representing China as a member of JD Gaming. This is a significant change as he has previously participated in Worlds seven times with the Korean Samsung/Gen.G organization. Kanavi, another player from JD Gaming, has also been to Worlds twice before but has never played in the LCK despite being a Korean resident. Only two native Koreans in the LPL have earned resident status.
With JD Gaming’s presence spread across the two strongest regions, it is clear that they are the favorites heading into Worlds. Their dominance in the Chinese regular season is undeniable, with an impressive record of 87-25 in individual games this year. They have already secured three titles in 2023, including two in the LPL and one at MSI. JD Gaming has the opportunity to achieve the League “grand slam,” a feat that has only been accomplished by one other team in history.
JD Gaming’s success at the Asian Games against both Korea and China further solidifies their position as the team to beat at Worlds. The tournament will commence on October 9 with the play-in stage, and JD Gaming will begin their journey on October 19 in the Swiss stage.
