Seven former employees of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf developer BioWare are taking legal action against the company after being offered inadequate compensation following their layoffs. Despite recent court cases in Alberta awarding a full month’s severance pay to workers in similar situations, BioWare allegedly offered a significantly lower amount to these employees. While some accepted the offer, the seven individuals chose to reject it and are now seeking fair severance pay and punitive damages. The employees claim that BioWare attempted to reduce its obligations to them, including eliminating benefits from termination pay, which goes against the Employment Standards Code.
The representative for the employees emphasized that these individuals are artists and creators who have dedicated their time and effort to the company, generating substantial profits. The mass layoff without cause calls for a response and fair treatment.
Unfortunately, the former BioWare employees who worked on the upcoming Dragon Age sequel will not be able to showcase their work in their portfolios, potentially hindering their job prospects during the holiday season. Despite this setback, they remain supportive of the titles they contributed to, including Dreadwolf, set to release in the summer of 2024.
In August, BioWare laid off a total of 50 employees, many of whom had been with the company for over 14 years. This is part of a larger trend in the video game industry, with other companies like Epic Games also experiencing layoffs.
