Superfans of players often go to extreme lengths to emulate their favorites, but sometimes it can become problematic. From harmful impersonation to annoying name changes, these interactions can disrupt the gaming experience. Currently, CS2’s leaderboard is flooded with players using the name “s1mple,” prompting fans to call on Valve to introduce verified professional player tags. This minor change would not only improve the leaderboard’s integrity but also highlight the significance of esports in Counter-Strike culture.
In CS:GO, FACEIT implemented a verification system for streamers and professional players to prevent griefing and protect the reputation of public figures in-game. This system also created exciting opportunities for ordinary players who found themselves matched with pros. Unfortunately, CS2 lacks such functionality, leaving Counter-Strike players frustrated with the absence of popular casual game modes like Valve-official retakes, Arms Race, and Danger Zone, as well as classic maps like Cobblestone and Train.
Despite these shortcomings, CS2’s foundation is solid and promises longevity. While the game requires improvements and bug fixes, it is far from the broken state that Global Offensive was in at launch. Valve appears more committed than ever to enhancing the in-game experience and esports scene. Although it may test the patience of gamers, Counter-Strike has the potential to reclaim its throne as the king of first-person shooters.
However, it remains uncertain whether Valve will heed the player base’s request and implement verified pro player tags on the Premier leaderboard in the near future.
