Massive Data Breach at Sony: 7,000 Employees Affected

superadmin

Sony, the multinational conglomerate known for its PlayStation console, is facing a significant data breach that has impacted around 7,000 current and former employees. The breach came to light after reports emerged on September 25 about a ransomware group attempting to sell Sony’s data. The incident occurred in MOVEit Transfer, a file-managed transfer software used by Sony employees.

In a letter sent to the affected workers, Sony confirmed the exposure of their data. However, the company has not yet made any public statements regarding the breach. As part of its response, Sony has offered credit monitoring through Equifax to the affected employees, along with assistance for identity restoration if necessary. The breach was discovered on June 2, following two instances of data breaches on May 31 and June 2.

This is not the first time Sony has faced such a massive data breach. In 2011, the company experienced a major breach that affected PlayStation 3 users, rendering the network unusable for several months. As a result, Sony had to pay a fine of approximately $396,100 under the UK Data Protection Act. Regulators at the time stated that the breach could have been prevented.

Sony is not alone in being targeted by hackers seeking to leak sensitive data from game companies. In January 2023, hackers claimed to have stolen source code from Riot Games, the creators of League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics. Similarly, an Activision Blizzard data breach in February exposed Call of Duty plans for the 2023 calendar year.

Despite the ongoing challenges posed by data breaches, Sony and other companies in the gaming industry continue to prioritize the security of their systems and the protection of their employees’ information.
