CD Projekt Red Considering Third-Person Perspective for Cyberpunk 2

Xavier Ward

CD Projekt Red, the developers of Cyberpunk 2077, are contemplating whether to adopt a third-person perspective for the highly anticipated sequel, tentatively named Cyberpunk 2. While the first-person perspective in Cyberpunk 2077 was praised for its immersive storytelling and intense action, it also presented limitations that a third-person mode could potentially resolve.

One of the drawbacks of the fixed first-person perspective in Cyberpunk 2077 was the inability to fully explore the stories of other major characters. Players were confined to experiencing the game solely through the eyes of their character, V, missing out on the narratives unfolding around them. Additionally, the absence of a third-person view prevented players from witnessing epic action scenes from a different vantage point or observing events in various locations.

Another peculiar aspect of Cyberpunk 2077 was the extensive character customization options, allowing players to meticulously design their appearance, including facial features, body proportions, and even genital customization. However, apart from brief glimpses in the equipment menu or when interacting with mirrors, players rarely had the opportunity to see their character during gameplay. This lack of visibility rendered the detailed character creator somewhat redundant.

Furthermore, the recent 2.0 patch introduced significant changes to the game’s gear and stat systems, rendering clothing purely cosmetic without any impact on gameplay. This decision seems questionable considering the absence of a third-person perspective, as players are unable to appreciate their character’s appearance and style.

By incorporating a third-person perspective or introducing third-person story sequences and cutscenes, CD Projekt Red could address these issues and enhance the overall experience of Cyberpunk 2. Many other successful RPGs, including CD Projekt Red’s own The Witcher series, have effectively utilized third-person perspectives to immerse players in their worlds.

The prospect of experiencing the next installment of Cyberpunk from a different perspective, with the option to choose between first or third-person, would undoubtedly provide a refreshing change for players. CD Projekt Red’s consideration of this alternative viewpoint demonstrates their commitment to evolving and refining their games based on player feedback and preferences.
