The highly anticipated reboot of the Zombies mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III has left fans divided. Activision recently shared 15 minutes of gameplay footage, and it seems that hardcore Zombies players are not pleased with the changes.
Comments from fans range from disappointment to frustration, with some describing the new open-world update as a “DMZ with a zombies texture pack” and “horrendous.” Many feel that the essence of the original game mode, which focused on defense and intense rounds, has been lost in favor of an exploration-based approach.
Previously, Zombies mode in Call of Duty offered a thrilling experience with its claustrophobic environments. Players relied on strategic defense tactics, such as shooting out the final zombie’s legs, to survive and prepare for the next round. The introduction of an open-world element contradicts the core appeal of the mode and completely replaces the classic round-based gameplay.
Aside from the shift in gameplay style, other notable changes include a 24-man lobby, the replacement of rounds with Zones of varying difficulty, and the inclusion of DMZ and Outbreak features. Players now have 45 minutes to explore the map, with a 15-minute window to extract. However, these additions seem to have further alienated the dedicated Zombies fanbase.
It appears that the Call of Duty series may be falling into the trap of trying to please everyone, ultimately resulting in a game that fails to satisfy anyone. The Zombies mode will be released alongside the core game on November 10, 2023.
