The first official Pokémon Scarlet and Violet regional tournament with the new Regulation E ruleset showcased the rise of a formidable Teal Mask Pokémon that single-handedly dominated the competition.
Peoria Regionals witnessed the debut of the beloved Legendary Ogerpon in the VGC scene, alongside other DLC Pokémon like Bloodmoon Ursaluna and Sinistcha. With the introduction of Regulation E, Ogerpon’s potential was highly anticipated, and the statistics from the event prove that this Grass Legendary is now a force to be reckoned with.
Ogerpon’s Hearthflame and Wellspring forms stole the show, with Hearthflame boasting a usage rate of 34.6% and Wellspring at 22.1%. Combined, these two forms accounted for a staggering 56.7% usage, surpassing even the dominant Paradox threats Flutter Mane and Iron Hands. Notably, this doesn’t even include Ogerpon’s Teal or Cornerstone forms.
The dominance of Ogerpon was evident in the top eight, where every player had either the Hearthflame or Wellspring form on their team. The sheer power, move set, and Tera ability of Ogerpon make it an irresistible choice for trainers.
In the finals, James Baek’s Wellspring Ogerpon faced off against Luka Trejgut’s Hearthflame Ogerpon. Both forms proved to be incredibly strong, with Hearthflame being the more popular pick overall, while Wellspring demonstrated greater success on day two. Ultimately, Baek’s Wellspring Ogerpon emerged victorious, with weather conditions playing a significant role in the outcome.
Three Wellspring and five Hearthflame Ogerpon made it to the top eight, showcasing their dominance. Even without weather manipulation, Ogerpon remains a formidable threat. However, when paired with Pokémon like Tornadus to set up rain or sun, the Wellspring and Hearthflame forms unleash devastating damage on the opposing team. Baek’s Wellspring Ogerpon secured a one-hit knockout on Trejgut’s Flutter Mane in the rain, concluding an exhilarating finals match at the first Regulation E regional tournament.
Following the outstanding performance of Wellspring and Hearthflame Ogerpon, we can expect to see a resurgence of rain and sun teams. While rain and Wellspring Ogerpon emerged victorious this time, sun teams also hold significant potential in this format. The sun not only benefits Hearthflame Ogerpon but also enhances the performance of Flutter Mane, Chi-Yu, and Heatran—three special attackers who have the opportunity to shine in a meta currently dominated by physical attackers.
