Poppy Emerges as the Most Banned Champion at Worlds 2023

Derek Morgan

The 2023 World Championship in South Korea is underway, and it seems that League of Legends champion Poppy is on track to become the most banned pick of the event. Despite not having the highest win rate, Poppy has proven to be a formidable force in the jungle and top lane in Patch 13.19, leading to her being banned in every game so far.

Poppy’s versatility and power are amplified in the hands of professional players, resulting in an impressive 63 percent win rate. Her ability to deal solid damage and provide exceptional crowd control during the mid game makes her a fearsome opponent. Skilled Poppy players have saved their teammates from certain death with well-timed ultimates and allowed their allies to focus on vulnerable backline targets without worrying about tank peel.

It’s worth noting that professional players are not building Poppy in unconventional ways. They still opt for items like Plated Steelcaps, Divine Sunderer, Iceborn Gauntlet, Dead Man’s Plate, or Sunfire Aegis, along with rune trees like Sorcerer and Inspiration for the jungle, and Grasp of the Undying and Inspiration for the top lane. The difference lies in their experience, teamfighting abilities, mechanical skills, and map awareness. Additionally, they have the advantage of playing alongside elite teammates, enabling them to consistently perform at their best.

While it’s still early in Worlds 2023, it’s likely that Poppy’s high ban rate will persist throughout the Play-In stage. Other champions such as Maokai, Jax, Lee Sin, and Rell are also proving to be powerful contenders. Only time will tell who will ultimately claim the title of the most banned champion at this year’s Worlds.
