Wriothesley, the Dark Duke of Fontaine’s Prison, Arrives in Genshin Impact

superadmin

Prepare to meet Wriothesley, the lord of the murky depths and Duke of Fontaine’s prison, as he makes his debut in Genshin Impact. This enigmatic character is set to bring a dark and mysterious presence to the game. However, his character teaser has left fans heartbroken, shedding light on his featured quote: “As a general rule, the less a person sees of me, the happier their life is.”

The recently released trailer showcases Wriothesley’s daily life as the Duke of the Fortress of Meropide, which players will have the opportunity to explore in the Archon quests introduced with Patch 4.1. In the trailer, he enters the home of a man, only to be greeted by the man’s young daughter. It becomes apparent that the daughter is unaware of her father’s impending imprisonment in the Fortress.

“Come back soon Daddy, I’ll miss you!” the daughter joyfully exclaims, oblivious to the grim fate awaiting her father. Wriothesley maintains a composed facade for his daughter but breaks down in tears as soon as she disappears. He then proceeds to handcuff the man and take him away mercilessly.

The emotional impact of the trailer resonated deeply with players. “We all knew where this was going, and it still hit hard in the feels,” one player expressed. The community’s response to Wriothesley’s narrative design has been overwhelmingly positive, praising the complexity of his character.

Players have already encountered Wriothesley in the Archon quest, where he showcased his strong and dark personality, along with hints of humor. They discovered that he was a former convict who had served time in the Fortress before eventually working there.

Sharp-eyed Genshin fans also noticed that the daughter in the trailer bears a striking resemblance to an NPC in the game named Veta. She wears the same clothes and shares the same appearance. Veta is a young girl who can be found running around Fontaine’s Adventurer’s Guild, inviting people to play a peculiar game where she guesses their savings. She mentions that her father is “a Snezhnayan envoy who’s been posted to the Northland Bank.” Snezhnaya is the Cryo region controlled by the Fatui.

Many questions arise after watching the trailer, such as the nature of the father’s crime. Hopefully, these inquiries will be answered when Wriothesley is released on October 17. As a five-star character, he is likely to have his own Story Quest, providing further insight into his backstory.

In addition to the character trailer, HoYoverse shared Wriothesley’s abilities on October 11. This Cryo Catalyst user possesses formidable fist-based attacks, along with interruption resistance and abilities centered around managing HP. He can sacrifice a portion of his HP to unleash his Elemental Skill and regain some of it through his Passive. His Elemental Burst delivers a devastating icy blow in a frontal area.

Genshin players now face a difficult decision between investing their Primogems in Wriothesley or Furina, Fontaine’s Archon, who is rumored to join the game in the next banner. Choosing between these two enticing characters will undoubtedly prove challenging.
