Shortages Could Lead to Price Spikes on Secondary Market
Concerns have emerged regarding potential allocation shortages for the Magic: The Gathering (MTG) Doctor Who collector booster box and Commander Precon decks. These shortages could potentially result in significant price increases on the secondary market.
In the past, allocation shortages of MTG products have had minimal impact on the secondary market. However, the scarcity of Disney Lorcana products caused substantial price spikes, raising concerns among Magic players about the upcoming Universes Beyond Doctor Who Eternal legal Commander set.
Rudy from Alpha Investments released a video suggesting that collector booster box allocations have been significantly reduced. Additionally, there have been reports on Reddit of canceled pre-orders for Commander Precon decks and complaints from local game store owners about allocation shortages for all MTG Doctor Who products.
To verify these claims, I contacted several local game stores in Central Florida. At the time of writing on October 11, the owners confirmed that they had received fewer Commander Precon cases and collector booster boxes than expected from their distributors. While such shortages are typically resolved within a few weeks, if the issue stems from a smaller print run, it could escalate into a more significant problem.
As of now, the prices of pre-order singles for the MTG Doctor Who Commander set have not seen any significant increase, which is a positive sign. The Universes Beyond Commander set is scheduled to release on October 13.
We have reached out to WotC (Wizards of the Coast) for comment on the allocation concerns.
