Toxicity in League of Legends: Pro Players Called Out for Immaturity and Ungratefulness

Tim Price

Toxicity is a persistent issue in League of Legends, affecting players at all levels of play. Even professional players contribute to this toxic environment by unnecessarily flaming their teammates, much to the disappointment of veteran stars.

During a recent stream, Team Liquid top laner Gabriël “Bwipo” Rau criticized toxic pro players, labeling them as “ungrateful” and “immature” individuals who fail to comprehend the privilege they have in playing competitive League for a living. Bwipo emphasized that without the fans’ support, these toxic players would not have a job, as it is the fans who drive the growth and success of the League scene.

Bwipo further expressed his frustration, stating, “You don’t respect the people who play alongside you, and you fail to appreciate the fact that you get paid to play this game. It’s a privilege to have players who are less skilled than you but still deeply invested in high-level play. So, when you go out of your way to argue with average players who enjoy this game for fun and belittle them for their skill level, it shows immaturity.”

Instances of pro players displaying toxicity in solo queue are not uncommon, ranging from excessive trash talk to griefing. For example, Cloud9 mid laner EMENES was recently caught making inflammatory remarks towards a teammate, including derogatory comments about their European nationality. Although he has since apologized and faced consequences from Riot Games, such behavior reflects poorly not only on the individual player but also on their teammates, organization, and the esports community as a whole.

While players have the right to defend themselves when attacked, excessive toxicity tarnishes their image and undermines the professionalism of the esports scene. It is crucial for pro players to recognize the impact of their actions and strive to create a positive and respectful gaming environment.
