The International 2023: Dota TV Fails to Meet Demand, Fans Turn to Twitch and YouTube

Tim Price

Dota TV, the in-game feature that allows fans to spectate tournament matches within the Dota 2 client, has been experiencing major issues during The International 2023. On the tournament’s first day, fans encountered severe lags and freezes that prevented them from spectating.

During the initial matches of TI 2023’s Road to The International, Dota TV failed to load, and when it eventually started working again, the feeds were plagued by continuous lagging and freezes.

As a result, many Dota 2 fans have migrated to watching TI12 on Twitch and YouTube. While these platforms are popular among viewers, some fans prefer following tournaments inside the Dota 2 client due to its spoiler-prevention tools and superior graphical quality. Additionally, players can engage in Dota 2 match predictions to earn prediction points.

However, Dota TV bugs and errors have prevented players from making predictions at the start of this week’s TI 2023 matches. This issue diminishes the appeal of watching matches in the client, and players are eagerly awaiting Valve’s fix.

Although there is a feature that allows players to make predictions on Twitch, its reliability is inconsistent.

Based on Dot Esports’ tests in Dota TV, the stutters seem to be specific to TI 2023, as no problems were encountered while spectating ranked matches. It is possible that the high number of spectators for a single match is causing server-side issues.

With TI 2023 expected to attract more Dota 2 viewers as the tournament progresses, Valve is under pressure to resolve these problems promptly.
