Sega’s latest addition to the Sonic franchise, Sonic Superstars, has unexpectedly made its way onto the shelves of J&L Game in New York ahead of its official release date. One2Switcheroo, a user on X (formerly Twitter), has been sharing their thoughts on the game while critics continue to provide their reviews.
The game aims to capture the nostalgia of long-time fans with its art direction and offers a cooperative experience for friends to enjoy together. Despite Sega’s efforts to keep the game under wraps, it seems that the distribution and social media teams will be disappointed with this early release.
While the extent of this mistake is still unknown, J&L Game and another local store are the only confirmed locations where the embargo has been broken. One2Switcheroo wasted no time in sharing a first look at the game’s cartridge art and the contents of the box. They have also spent several hours playing the game and have generally positive feedback to share.
According to One2Switcheroo, Sonic Superstars feels like a 3D version of Sonic Mania, with impressive level design. However, they did note some issues with the camera in multiplayer mode and personally still preferred Sonic Mania. It’s worth mentioning that Sonic Mania, released in 2017, was highly praised by fans and critics alike for its classic style, while Sonic Forces, released shortly after, received mediocre ratings.
It is expected that a first-day patch will address some of the minor concerns raised by One2Switcheroo. The official release date for Sonic Superstars remains October 17th.
